This collection contains various records, documents, and other items related to the John T. Benson Post No. 527 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Lanesville, Harrison County, Indiana. The GAR was a fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans. The national organization formed in 1866 and developed state level "Departments" and community level "Posts" throughout the country. The GAR began in Indiana in 1866 and reached its membership height in the state around 1890. Several GAR Posts existed in Harrison County. The John T. Benson Post No. 527 was based in Lanesville and consisted of members from both Harrison and Floyd Counties. It formed in December 1887 and continued until at least 1919.
