About this collection

The Harrison County School Collection consists of documents and images related to public schools in the county throughout their history. It reflects the evolution of education in Harrison County from the emergence of numerous rural one-room schoolhouses in the nineteenth century through the development of secondary schools and the rise of the modern high school system. The collection is organized by town or village and township. It primarily consists of photographs of school buildings and students, and also has numerous examples of commencement programs. A particularly important document in the collection is the roll of the House of Representatives on the 1879 vote on racial integration of public schools. This document notes each representative's surname and his vote on the issue.

Commencement programs in the collection date from 1883 to 1963 and are largely from high school ceremonies, although a few examples are from grade school commencements. Most of these programs list the names of graduates for the given year, and several of them also list faculty members and board members. Of particular interest is a 1903 booklet from Corydon High School that provides a very detailed explanation of the school's curriculum and coursework. This booklet also contains a list of the school's graduates from its first commencement in 1879 through 1903.

Images in the collection date from the 1890s through the 1950s. Several photographs are of high school senior classes of the 1940s and 1950s that were taken in front of the county courthouse. Earlier images of small rural schools are typically of the entire student body posed in front of their school building. Many, but not all, individuals in the photographs have been identified. If you have identification information regarding any of the images, please contact the Griffin Center at genealogy@hcpl.lib.in.us. While not all schools or localities are represented in this collection, it reflets the holdings of the Frederick Porter Griffin Center. Anyone who wishes to donate similar documents or images to expand the collection may contact the Griffin Center at genealogy@hcpl.lib.in.us.
